I hardly know where to begin in telling you of my experiences here. First, you may be assured that the nurses are not in direct danger. The hospital at which we are stationed is an old barracks, ill-suited for the purpose. It is not in the Crimea itself but in Constantinople, near the Bosphorus Sea.

Mama’s concerns about the soldiers have proven misplaced. Although rough in speech and dress, lacking in refinement and education, they behave toward us with utter respect and gratitude, even amidst their suffering. It is terribly sad to see how the mere presence of a woman can cheer them, in spite of the gravity of their wounds.
